Why is my broadband slower than advertised?
Advertised speeds are "up to" figures. Your actual speed depends on several factors:
- Distance from your local street cabinet or exchange (for ADSL and VDSL/FTTC connections);
- Quality and age of the copper wiring inside your property;
- Your router's position and Wi-Fi interference from neighbours;
- Network congestion during peak hours (typically 7–9 pm);
- The number of devices connected simultaneously.
Full fibre (FTTP) connections are far more consistent because fibre runs all the way to your home with no copper involved.
What is ping and why does it matter?
Ping (or latency) measures how long it takes a signal to travel from your device to a server and back — in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better.
- Under 20 ms — excellent for gaming and video calls;
- 20–50 ms — good for most uses;
- 50–100 ms — acceptable, may notice lag in games;
- Over 100 ms — high latency; gaming and calls will feel sluggish.
